Let’s start with the very basics and find out. I have a three-step plan that will help anyone achieve or maintain healthy skin for a lifetime. It doesn’t matter what ethnicity or gender you are, if you have skin read further and learn how you can keep your skin younger and healthier looking, longer. In the November issue we said the first step is having a good daily skin care regimen; cleanse, prevent, resurface/treat, moisturize and protect the skin.
The second step is using the appropriate products for your skin. Using the right product can make all the difference. When choosing a skin care regimen it is necessary to take into consideration the condition of the skin as it relates to lifestyle and the season. For example, for someone that exercises on a regular basis and is looking for cleanser in the summer time, chances are this person will benefit most from a gel or foam type of cleanser because of its absorbency. The reason is simply that summer weather tends to bring out excessive oil due to perspiration and so does exercising. However, as the seasons change it may be necessary for that person to switch to a creamy cleanser that will provide a little more hydration during the colder months. I always recommend using holistic, all natural products that do not have any artificial fragrance or preservatives. It is sometimes very difficult to determine what products your skin needs because of hormonal changes, age management concerns, sun damage, stress/anxiety levels and use of medication. It certainly does not help that there are hundreds, if not thousands of skin care products marketed every day that only add to the confusion of deciding what is best to use. When you think of it in this way it will make is much easier for you. There are only two types of products are on the market; the kind that you can select at your own discretion and the kind that has to be selected for you by a licensed skin care professional. The products that you have access to will almost never have a high enough percentage of any active ingredient to help you get the results you want. In order to save time and money it is best to get a recommendation from your Aesthetician about which products are best for your skin after a thorough skin analysis. The skin analysis is usually part of a professional treatment, which is what we will explore next month.
Be sure to look for step 3, the final step in achieving and maintaining healthy skin in the next issue of Our Town Magazine where you will find out why it is important to get professional skin care treatments. Find out why, if you are not currently getting facials…you should be.
JUST ASK LISA
Should I use moisturizer even though I have extremely oily skin?
Absolutely, you should use a water-based moisturizer. Since the skin is producing oil naturally, the moisturizer should provide the water the skin needs to keep it properly hydrated. It will also help control the amount of oil your skin is producing because when you don’t use a moisturizer, it sends a message to your oil glands to produce additional oil because it thinks your skin is too dry. This is the last thing overactive oil glands need to do!
